This year is a “Leap Year” … meaning that we get an extra day in the normal month of February and an extra day in this year. Today is like a “free day!” I like free things! When I was a boy, we had a small restaurant down the road from our house. They sold pizza’s and hoagies. We did not get to go there often, but when we did, I always asked my dad for a quarter to play the pinball machine. Again, this did not happen often, but once-in-awhile he would give me a quarter.
I don’t remember much about that pinball machine, but I do remember that if you reached a certain score, you would get to play for “free.” You didn’t get only the original allotment of balls to flick up the machine, you got a few extra’s. My goal was always to get those “free” balls to use in the game! I don’t know why, but I feel like this day, February 29th is like a “free” day! I know that isn’t actually true, but just play along with me for a bit.
If you did have an extra day, have you ever thought what you might do with it? Most of us reading this have had a family member pass away, and we wished we had a little more time with them. Have you ever thought about what that family member might do with a “free” day? Well, you needn’t think about it too long, because Jesus told us a very real story about a man who wished for that “free” day in the book of Luke.
A rich man died, and the Bible tells us in Luke 16 that he left this life to enter eternal life in Hell. He made a request of a beggar he knew had a relationship with Christ, who had also died and entered Heaven. His request was simple: “Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father’s house: For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment” (Luke 16:27-28).
If you died and were given a “free,” extra day, I have a feeling that your heart would be to tell more people about the way to escape Hell, just like this rich man. We know that Abraham told him that Lazarus could not return to his family. Today, February 29th, we have an extra day. The best possible way to use this day would be to tell someone about Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection! Hell is real. Heaven is real. Once our life ends, we will have no more opportunity to tell someone about Jesus. Use this extra day to do just that! You will not regret it for a moment of eternity!

Each day is a gift from God. I would hope if Hd gave me another day, hope I would tell others how much He loves them and try and reach them for Him.
