Have you ever asked God to help you remember something? There are times that I lay my head on my pillow, and the greatest idea I have ever had comes to my mind. I struggle between getting back out of bed to write it down or wondering if I will remember that idea when I wake up. Sometimes I gather the courage to get out from under the warm blankets to venture out to my desk to write that idea down. Many times, I simply ask God to help me remember the idea when I wake up in the morning.
Have you ever asked God to help you not to remember? There are sins in my past that I would like to erase from my memory. There are failures in my past that I would like to take out of my memory bank. There are people I have failed to help that I would like to forget. There are certainly missed opportunities that have gone by the wayside, never to return. I have asked God to help me not to remember some of these things as well.
Today I read how David went through these same struggles in his life. He wrote, “Remember, O LORD, thy tender mercies and thy lovingkindnesses; for they have been ever of old. Remember not the sins of my youth, nor my transgressions: according to thy mercy remember thou me for thy goodness’ sake, O LORD” (Psalm 25:6-7). Here is the struggle that David faced. He served an omniscient God Who has the ability to remember everything. David had some times in his own life that he wished God would forget.
David wanted God to wipe his past sins from the mind of God. Praise God for the promise of Hebrews 10:17! God promises, “And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more.” What an incredible God we serve! Even though our memories sometimes haunt us with the sins we have committed in the past, God (the omniscient One) promises to forget them all! I believe we still have the need to confess our sins; to repent of our sins; and to forsake our sins. This is our responsibility, but as for God, He has promised that He will not remember them!
David also asked God to remember His tender mercies toward us. We have such a merciful God! The struggles we have with trying to live godly in an ungodly world do not go unnoticed by our perfect, pure, and holy God. He knows what we are facing – His Son experienced temptation in all ways while here on the earth. He knows the pain of sin – it cost Him His one and only Son! His mercies are new every morning. Great is the faithfulness of God! He remembers His mercy … He forgets our sin. What an incredible God we serve today! Praise Him for His never-ending mercy!
