Our God is amazing, incredible, marvelous … beyond human description. When trying to explain how good God is, I find that the two languages I know fall very short of adequately describing Him. The English language fails – Sign Language fails. God is absolutely indescribable. Having said that, there is one person in the Bible who wrote a number of our psalms who tried his best to describe God using terminology that we could identify with using our language. He used word-pictures for us that help us along the way, but also fail to fully describe the incredible character and Person of God.

David wrote, “Hear my cry, O God; attend unto my prayer. From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I; For thou hast been a shelter for me, and a strong tower from the enemy. I will abide in thy tabernacle for ever: I will trust in the covert of thy wings. Selah” (Psalm 61:1-4). He began by describing feelings that we all have in life. Times when we feel overwhelmed. This is a natural condition of all people, whether saved, or unsaved in this world. One of the beauties of our relationship with God is that the believer never needs to approach these situations alone.

We have a ROCK to stand upon. This ROCK is higher than we are, and therefore is above the overwhelming situations we face. Nothing is too big for Him. God is our ROCK He is a SHELTER for the believer. When the battle is raging, the soldier wants to know there is a fortress to run into. Every soldier wants a strategic place to wage the battle from … this describes our God.

God is a strong TOWER. In war, a TOWER, or a structure strategically placed above the fray, allows observation of things that cannot be seen from the battlefield. God is watching out for our todays as well as our tomorrows. The last word-picture David uses to help us is that of hiding in the COVERT of the wings of God. This describes a hiding place in the cleft of a rock. David had often hidden in safety from his worst enemies. He knew the peace he experienced within that cave, even though the troops were gathered against him just outside.

As you read this today, take comfort in knowing that when you are overwhelmed, this is the God Who stands for you. Take even more comfort in knowing that these descriptive words do not even begin to describe Who God is, and what He is doing on your behalf. We serve an incredible God!
