I must start today by thanking God for His mercy in my life. There are so many times I have deserved far worse treatment than I have received. The Bible has a great deal to say about mercy in relation to us. Think about it for a moment; if God did not extend mercy to us, none of us would have any hope of Heaven, or even blessing from God. We need His mercy all throughout our days, every day.

Today I read, “Who remembered us in our low estate: for his mercy endureth for ever” (Psalm 136:23). I love the contrast we see between our “low estate” and the mercy that God offers to His children. We are sorely lacking in our ability to walk faithfully with God. We are totally dependent upon the mercy of God to have any kind of right standing with God. We are totally inept at maintaining a walk with God. If God does not reach to us, we have no help of every reaching to Him. What a great promise this verse gives to each of us!

Think about how merciful God was after Adam and Eve fell into sin. If any of us had been God, and our creation failed so severely, we might have wiped them out and started all over again. It is important for us to realize an amazing truth here … God knew before He started forming Adam out of the dust of the earth, and he would one day turn his back on God, and choose to sin against the character of God. God was not surprised the day that Adam and Eve fell into sin.

I don’t know that we can fully grasp the depth of the mercy of God, but the events that came after Adam and Eve’s fall can help us to see a glimpse of it. God, knowing that the price for their sin would be the death of His Son, still allowed them to have free will to choose sin. His mercy is indescribable! The reality of this verse is clearly seen in the story of Adam and Eve. God was never unaware of the low estate of this couple. While they were created perfect, in a perfect world, they were still capable of sin. God, on the other hand, is separate from that sin, and maintains His perfection and will throughout eternity.

I am so glad that I know Him personally! I cannot believe the tender care He offers me daily. I want to close today by praising Him for His incredible mercy He pours out on this poor, undeserving sinner every day. He saw me in my low estate, and loved me in spite of my inability to offer Him anything in return. All I can say is, ‘What a Savior!’ I want to pause to thank God for His mercy today, and every day.
