When I was a little boy, Roy Rogers, and the Lone Ranger were heroes of mine. Every Saturday morning I would sit in front of our black and white TV and watch an episode of these two shows. When they were finished, my cousin and I would meet in the small woods between our houses and play “Cowboys and Indians” (please forgive me … we had not heard the words political correctness back in the 60’s). We would play all morning with sticks for guns and imaginations for everything else. We would imagine the enemy closing in on us from all sides. We would look at each other and say, “We’re surrounded!” Of course, each of us took turns being Roy Rogers or the Lone Ranger and rescuing ourselves from the danger!
Today I found out from my Bible that we really are surrounded! For those of us who have trusted Jesus Christ as our personal Savior, we have been surrounded by an awesome God. Psalm 125:2 explains, “As the mountains are round about Jerusalem, so the LORD is round about his people from henceforth even for ever.” This past fall, Terry and I had the opportunity to return to Israel. We stood in Jerusalem at a high point, and witnessed the word picture the psalmist painted for us in this chapter. Jerusalem is truly surrounded by mountains. In that same way, ever since I believed in Jesus as my Savior, God has set Himself around me. What exactly does that mean?
One of the things it means is that there is nothing that comes into my life without first having passed through the approval process of my Heavenly Father. Nothing comes in the gate of my life without God first knowing that it will be the best thing for me. In other words, there is no sense in me wasting time in complaining about the things I don’t like in my life. God has a divine purpose for everything that comes my way. What I do need to do, is look for that purpose, accept it, embrace it, and find all the benefits I can from those things. I trust God far more than I trust my own judgment. There have been many things that I questioned in my life at times. I am not telling you that I have had a smile on my face during all the difficulties of my life, but I can tell you that when I look back on those times, I realize that God kept His hand of protection and guidance on me the entire time. I have been surrounded for fifty-five years of my life! I am a blessed man! I will close by telling you that Roy Rogers and the Lone Ranger never came to my rescue one time; but God has never failed to show up at the exact time I have needed Him. Of course, He can do that, because He never leaves or forsakes me! I am content to be “surrounded!”
