When involving yourself in any kind of competition, you look for an edge. Something that will give you an advantage over your opponent. I remember September 3, 2000 when the Philadelphia Eagles were preparing to play the hated Dallas Cowboys. The temperature during the game was 109, and it was estimated that they reached 130 degrees on the field. In order to get an edge on the Cowboys, the Eagles coaching staff had the players drink dill pickle juice before the game began. The salty mixture gave the Philadelphia Eagles players the advantage they hoped for, and they crushed the Cowboys, 41-14!
People in business are always looking for ways to gain an advantage over their competitors. A cheaper way to make a product without lessening the integrity of the product … a way to use machinery rather than people to eventually lessen the cost … anything that will give them even a slight advantage over their competition. In sports, in business, and even in ministry. We want to do what we do better than others do it to be as successful as possible. There is nothing wrong with wanting to be successful in the things we do, as long as we remain true to the Word of God.
If you want the ultimate advantage, you need to submerse yourself in the Word of God. Today I read, “Thou through thy commandments hast made me wiser than mine enemies: for they are ever with me” (Psalm 119:98). The reality is that as a Christian, when you spend time in the Bible, it gives you an advantage in life. The principles of the Word of God gives you an advantage in business, in sports, and in the ministry. I will tell you that the principles needed to be a success even in business, are found in the Word of God. When you want to be successful, even in sports, there are principles in the Word of God that will give you an advantage. The Bible is the key to success in this life. Time spent in the Word of God is time well spent to help you live the way God wants you to live. Time spent in the Word of God will show you habits that should be in your life to help you to avoid the pitfalls the life so often brings our way. God loves us so much that He gives us good advice to help us live right. The question is not whether or not these things will help us, the question is whether or not we will submit to them and surrender our will to the will of our Father. I want to encourage you today to get in the Word of God daily, and stay in the Word of God. Success does not come easy, but if you want to get an edge in life, the key will be your submission to the truths of the Scriptures. Don’t neglect time in the Word! It will help you if you yield to it!
