“And the whole congregation of the children of Israel murmured against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness” (Exodus 16:2). It doesn’t take long for “murmuring” to show up! These same people had just witnessed the miraculous power of God displayed in the ten plagues that struck the Egyptians, enabling them to leave their 400+ years of bondage! They had just seen a pillar of cloud and fire block the entire Egyptian army from reaching them when they were on the edge of the Red Sea with no place to go. They had then witnessed one of the most commonly known and talked about miracles still today when the Red Sea stood as walls and they passed on dry ground! They witnessed the obvious hand of God when He released the waters on the Egyptians, after they had all gotten into the midst of it.
After seeing all that incredible power of God on display, it did not take long for them to begin “murmuring.” Not much has changed! We still follow the same example they set for us today! We have seen the hand of God working in our lives today, and most of the time it is far easier for us to complain than it is to praise Him! What was their problem there on the other side of the Red Sea? What is our problem today? I think the problem with murmuring is that we do it when we feel we are not in the center of the universe, where we think we belong!
The New Testament reinforces the idea that there is no place for murmuring today. “Do all things without murmurings and disputings” (Philippians 2:14). I can understand those without Christ murmuring … but we who have be passed from death unto life … we who were headed to an eternity of weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth, to streets of gold, and the ability to meet God face to face! What do we have to murmur about? Why are we so quick to complain about God and what He is doing to us? Again, I return to my answer above … we have taken the position of center stage in our own minds and in our lives. That is a sad picture!
We demand so much more! Stop today and thank God for the little things He has blessed you with today. Don’t join the murmuring crowd! Don’t allow your heart to become so selfish that you take the place that belongs to our God! Don’t be guilty of following the example of the Israelites and complain about anything today. It is important that each of us realize that God has planned this day for our lives in a way that will bring Him maximum glory. Don’t complain about it, but do you part to stay within the center of His will and do all that He has planned for you today. Some of that may include some difficult things, but He will supply all your needs.
