April 23

I can remember many times in my life when I needed help, but there were very few options that could, or would offer the help. I have found in those times that God is all I need. In one room of our house, we have a plaque hanging on the wall that simply states, “You will never know God is all you need, until God is all you have.” The truth is that God is all we need. When troubles come your way, don’t turn to friends or family first; turn to God first. When we do finally decide to turn to God, we will realize that we should have gone to Him first, because He will meet every need we bring Him.

Today I read Psalm 54. I cannot choose one verse, so I want to put all seven verses in this devotional. This chapter was written by David when King Saul was pursuing him to kill him. He must have felt as though he had no friends, and nowhere to turn. In that situation, David penned these words:

Save me, O God, by thy name, and judge me by thy strength. Hear my prayer, O God’ give ear to the words of my mouth. For strangers are risen up against me, and oppressors seek after my soul: they have not set God before them. Selah. Behold, God is mine helper: the Lord is with them that uphold my soul. He shall reward evil unto mine enemies: cut them off in thy truth. I will freely sacrifice unto thee: I will praise thy name, O LORD; for it is good. For he hath delivered me out of all trouble: and mine eye hath seen his desire upon mine enemies.

David’s words ring so true in my soul. David was experiencing the father of his best friend coming to kill him. Everywhere David tried to hide was revealed because of the spies Saul had helping him. Remember that David had done nothing wrong. He had done nothing to deserve the treatment he was receiving, and yet, things were still bad wherever he turned. Most of the troubles I have faced in my life were because I had messed up, and I deserved the consequences I was facing.

The one thing that I can testify to is that God is my helper regardless of the trouble I find myself facing today. Even if I have failed Him, He is the One to Whom I run for forgiveness! He is ready, able, and willing to forgive! When I need protection, or wisdom, or guidance … it is God Who stands for me and offers me the help I so desperately need. Today I am reminded that there is no challenge ahead of me, or behind me that God cannot handle. I want to rest in Him today. I want to run to His throne and throw myself on His mercy! I know that His mercies endure forever and are new today!
