“My son, let not them depart from thine eyes: keep sound wisdom and discretion: So shall they be life unto thy soul, and grace to thy neck.” “When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid: yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet” (Proverbs 3:21-22, 24).
With all that is happening around our world every day, it makes it hard to lay your head on the pillow at night and sleep. There are many people who take a pill to go to sleep at night, and some of the same who take a pill to get them going in the morning. For the Christian, however, God has provided exactly what we need to help us to sleep at night and get up and going in the morning. God has given us a Bible that contains all the wisdom we will need for each day we live. That Bible contains the solutions to the challenges we will face, along with the peace that comes from knowing its Author.
When life seems to be too much to handle, turn to your Bible. As the verse above says“… let them not depart from thine eyes.” The Bible certainly has “sound wisdom and discretion” and you can depend upon its teachings for the challenges you will face today and every day. I am so thankful for the anchor of the Word of God in this life that seems to have stormier, windy days than calm and peaceful.
When I hear the things that come across the nightly news I am glad I know the Master of the universe. When I hear of sickness and death at every turn, I am glad to know the one Who views the death of His saints with precious thoughts! When others are worrying and fretting about possible financial difficulties, I am reminded of the lilies in the fields that don’t worry and are clothed more beautifully than the wealthiest king … I think about the sparrows that are always fed by their Master. Why is it that I am tempted to worry and fret about the things around me to the point of losing sleep? It all comes down to the verses above. If I change my view from the Word of God and its promises, to the difficulties that are right in front of me, I will live a life filled with anxiety and worry. I will need a sleeping pill at night and a “get up in the morning” pill to get me going. I would rather read my Bible in the morning … claim a truth or two for the day, and let God take care of the rest. Some will say that is an overly simplistic view of life, but I believe it is an accurate view of these verses. If you’re having trouble sleeping at night, don’t run to the medicine cabinet, run to the truths of the Word of God … and snore away!
